Home ownership brings with it a variety of new responsibilities. One that can be very rewarding and enjoyable is caring for your new lawn. Lawn maintenance requires dedication and the right touch, but when it’s done properly, you’re rewarded with a lush garden that boosts your curb appeal. Below are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure healthy grass growth.

A Basic Guide to Lawn Maintenance

1. Mowing

Lawn mowing is a little more complicated than most people realize. You must keep the grass at just the right length to keep it both healthy and attractive. Invest in a high-quality mower; if you have a large yard, you may even want a riding mower. Plan to mow once every five to seven days, depend on how quickly the grass is growing. Cut your grass approximately three inches and never shorter than two, as this leaves the lawn susceptible to pests and weeds.

2. Watering

lawn careWatering is easiest if you can program an automatic sprinkler system to go off on a set schedule. If your home doesn’t have one, it’s a worthwhile investment. Water your lawn in the early morning to reduce water waste from evaporation. Avoid watering in the evening, since a lawn left wet overnight can invite disease or fungal growth. Adjust your watering schedule based on the type of grass you have and the season; your landscape contractors can help you determine the right amount of water.

3. Fertilizing

Fertilizer gives the lawn some key nutrients to promote strong growth. Do this in the late spring between April and June as well as in the early fall between September and November. Use a drop spreader for the best results. Fertilizer does not come in a one-size-fits-all solution; use a soil test kit to see which nutrients your soil is lacking and select a fertilizer that will provide it.
