When a contact lens slips around your eye, it can leave you scrambling to find a solution. It’s a scary experience for many people, and it’s important to first remember that it’s not going to cause serious damage or lead to blindness. It’s actually a common eye care issue, and once you’ve calmed down, there are a few steps to take.

Steps to Retrieve a Lost Contact Lens From Your Eye

1. Apply Saline Drops

eye careContact lenses often become stuck along the sides or below the upper lid because the eye dries out. You’ll need to rehydrate, so apply saline drops approved by your eye care professional. This will allow the contact to move away from the eye’s membrane and travel toward the front. Never use tap water as a replacement, as you may introduce bacteria into your eye.

2. Look Around & Work Your Eyelids

Once your eyes are rehydrated, look in different directions to draw the contact lens forward. If you can feel it on a specific part of your eye, look in the opposite direction. It’s helpful to have another person assist. When the contact is visible, pull it forward with the flat bottom of your finger. Never pinch, as you may scratch your eye. You can also try flipping your eyelid insight out to reach the contact lens.

3. Wait It Out

The contact lens will inevitably find its way out of your eye, so if you can’t reach it on your own, sit back and wait. You can reach out to an eye care professional if you have concerns. They can provide valuable advice, and if necessary, invite you in for an exam to remove the contact lens. You can avoid repeat incidents by only wearing contact lenses that are prescribed by your eye doctor. Make sure to hydrate them regularly and keep them clean. If they warp or tear, replace them, and always ask your eye doctor any questions you have.
