Historically, the Catholic Church forbade cremation services because they thought it to be in opposition to the belief that the body can be resurrected after death. In recent years, however, the Church's position has changed. Cremation is allowed, so long as certain customs are followed. To better understand the Church's requirements, below are some important points to know about cremation and Catholicism.

Ashes Must Be Buried, Not Scattered

At the heart of the Church's original position on cremation was their belief that cremation was disrespectful to the body and its hopes of resurrection. And though the Church now permits cremation, they still take the position that the remains of the body must be treated with reverence. That means burying them in a holy place. The Church holds that scattering the ashes doesn’t properly venerate the person who has passed away.

Ashes May Be Present at a Funeral

This rule changed in 1997, when the Church allowed funerals in the presence of cremated remains. They underscore that the presence of the physical form is what's important; having the deceased present helps loved ones grieve and brings closure.

Cremation Cannot Be Performed for Reasons That Are Contrary to Catholic Teachings

According to the Church, you can be a devout Catholic and still be cremated. The only exception to this rule, however, is if a person chooses cremation as a way to go against their teachings or to openly refute the authority of the Church. Ultimately, the Church wants the cremation service to be sacred and the ashes to be respected.
