Oral infections are the number one disease that affect mankind.  Research has shown that patients with poor oral hygiene are at a greater risk of heart disease which is the leading cause of death worldwide.  Gum disease (periodontal disease) and decayed teeth are major players in an increase in oral bacteria. If you have halitosis (bad breath) see your dentist! The bacteria in your mouth is circulated throughout your entire body.  A high bacterial count correlates to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, including a higher risk of having a stroke.

Insurance companies are increasingly becoming aware of this issue.  Most insurance policies will cover two cleanings every six months. What I have seen in my practice the past year is that some insurance companies are now covering dental cleanings every three months with patients that not only have cardiovascular disease but also diabetes.  The logic is simple:  the lower the bacterial count in the oral cavity the less the chance of these diseases increasing in severity.  Check with your dental insurance carrier if your insurance policy allows this.

Practice better oral hygiene habits to potentially lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and other health issues.  Ask your dentist and hygienist what you can do to increase your oral hygiene regiment.  I am sure you will find they will be a gold mine of information.
