Packing is usually the most time-consuming and stressful part of moving to a new house. While it may seem convenient, don’t simply throw everything in boxes and sort it out once you arrive as it’ll be difficult to unpack. If you’ve hired a moving truck, keep in mind that not everything should be loaded onto it because some common household items are risky to transport.

What to Avoid Packing on the Truck

1. Hazardous Materials

Although they don’t pose a concern when stored in proper conditions, the inside of moving trucks can reach high temperatures that increase your risk of danger. Anything flammable or combustible is considered hazardous and can’t be packed in boxes that’ll go on the truck. This includes batteries, paint, matches, lighter fluid, gasoline, bleach, fireworks, and pesticides. Federal law prohibits shipping these items, and a violation can result in hefty fines.

2. Perishable Foods

movingIf you can’t consume all of your groceries before moving day, consider donating them to a local charity. Without proper refrigeration, ingredients can quickly go bad during the relocation, making it unsafe to eat. Additionally, your food may spill in the truck, creating a mess and damaging other items. Messes will attract bugs or rodents that can damage your belongings and invade your new home.

3. Plants

Most companies won’t allow you to pack items that require special attention, such as plants. Plants require sunlight and water for survival, and going even a short distance without either can be detrimental to their health. They may also harbor destructive pests, like roaches, ants, and termites, that can harm your other belongings.
