Keeping kids under control can be a challenge under ideal circumstances, but when you ask them to pose for a photo, it often takes greater effort to get them to cooperate. There are several strategies that professionals and savvy parents employ to help kids behave before the camera. Here are four suggestions that may help.

How to Photograph a Kid

1. Whisper

Kids will naturally stop what they’re doing and pay closer attention if you suddenly whisper. They may lean in slightly, smile a bit, or look at you with curiosity. All are excellent starting points for a quickly snapped candid picture. Continue lowering your volume on occasion throughout the session to amass a series of fun shots.

2. Use Props

Add a few colorful, tactile props to the equation to make camera time more enjoyable for kids. Be creative in what you use. Blowing bubbles is an easy way to capture a wondrous expression, for example. Adding a basket of flower petals is a lovely touch, especially if the little one tosses them in the air. If necessary, offer a source of comfort, such as a security blanket or a beloved stuffed animal. The child is likely to feel more at ease if there’s a familiar element involved.

camera3. Play a Game

For slightly older kids, transform the photo session by introducing a fun game of “freeze!” for the camera. To play, tell the child to remain completely motionless when you say “freeze.” This will make for some amusing photographs, depending on their frozen position.

4. Make It Silly

You might be focused on creating a flawless moment for the photograph, but you’ll have better luck if you don’t attempt to exert complete control over the shot. It’s unlikely a kid will remain focused for so long. Instead, make funny faces at them, clap your hands, dance around, or play peekaboo to catch their eye and keep them engaged.
