Performing repairs or making upgrades around the house means breaking out the power tools. No matter how experienced you are at performing home improvement projects, it’s always wise to brush up on good safety habits with the equipment you use. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow.

Do:

Wear eye protection.

This one is more dependent on the type of tool you’re using. Sanders, grinders, and power saws are almost guaranteed to send debris flying up into the air. This can sometimes happen even if you’re only using a drill or vacuum, so make sure you have goggles on before starting this kind of job.

Inspect tools for problems.

Speaking of your eyes, you should use them for a good inspection of each tool you plan to use. Whether you’re using a power saw or plumbing pump, inspect their connective components for signs of wear. If the tool has a blade, make sure it isn’t warped or cracked. Even if tools are only slightly damaged, you should consider whether it will compromise the job or your safety should you continue using them.

Don’t:

Pull cables or operate using sweaty hands.

power toolsWhen you’re “pulling the plug” after using power tools, it can be easy to pull the cord instead. By doing this, you risk damaging the cable’s connection to the plug and the insulation around it. You should also be careful touching plugs if your hands are sweaty or wet.

Store or transport tools unsafely.

If you’re working high up, be careful about leaving power tools in a spot where they could fall down on someone below. When carrying sharp tools like drill bits, make sure you don’t put them in your pocket, and carry them with the point away from your body.
