Reflexology is a holistic health practice that has become increasingly popular as people seek safe, natural alternatives to traditional medical treatments. Although it’s used in modern North America, this practice has roots, dating back to the 10th century on the other side of the world.

The History of Foot Reflexology

Ancient Practices

Reflexology has roots in acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice that involves applying pressure to specific points in the body to alleviate pain and ailments. Both holistic treatments take an individualized approach to medicine. Evidence of reflexology in China dates back to 1000 B.C. There’s also evidence that indicates people in Tibet, India, Egypt, and North America have practiced some form of foot reflexology for many centuries.

European Influence

reflexologyReturning from his adventures in China, explorer Marco Polo introduced Europe to many concepts, including massage. In the 17th century, the knowledge he shared with Europeans influenced a practice called zone therapy. The method closely resembled reflexology, involving the application of pressure to the hands and feet to relieve pain in other areas of the body.

The 1900s

Dr. William Fitzgerald published a piece on zone therapy in a magazine in 1917, which was the first time the concept of foot therapy was introduced to the public. The treatment remained controversial until the early 1930s when Eunice Ingham helmed efforts to bring reflexology into mainstream medical practices.

At the time, most physicians weren’t interested in the technique as it required extensive learning. Ingham published maps showing the correlation between the feet and organs, which allowed people to use the practice themselves. She and her nephew, Dwight Byers, founded the International Institute, where they taught the Original Ingham Method, which is the foundation for many reflexology courses today.
