Finding a church where you genuinely feel at home can be a challenge and a triumph. Once you’ve settled on a congregation, you will want to do everything you can to become a trusted, integral part of the group. But where should you start? If you’re hoping to become part of the fabric that is a church family, take advantage of the following tips.

3 Tips on How to Get Involved at Church

1. Remember, Seats Aren’t Assigned

On your first day of school, you may have chosen a seat in the most comfortable part of the class, and stayed there throughout the year out of habit. However, as an adult, it’s important to remind yourself that there are no assigned seats. To meet new people in your church family, you’ll have to stay mobile, choosing a different spot for every service or bible study. Even if you don’t strike up a conversation the first time, you’ll have many more opportunities to meet new friends if you keep sitting next to different people.

2. Join a Small Group

churchSunday services are not your only chance to get involved at a new church—many congregations have events going on nearly every day of the week. Look in the church bulletin or on their website to find a small committee or bible study that appeals to you, and pencil in the meeting on your calendar. When you’re talking amongst a group of five to 15 people, especially those that have something in common with you, you’ll be much more likely to make lasting connections.

3. Talk to the Pastor

After your first church service, don’t head straight to the parking lot—walk up to the pastor and shake their hand. Tell them that you’re a new member and that you’re enthusiastic about getting involved. In addition to learning your face and name, they might be able to recommend groups or missions that could use some extra hands. Alternatively, the pastor may introduce you to other members they believe you would get along with well. At the very least, they’ll look out for your presence at future services, establishing your role as a member of the congregation.
