Whether you’re at a high-school football match or little league baseball, there’s no better way to capture the highlights of a game than with a digital camera in hand. But to ensure you gather the best action shots, it’s a good idea to learn how to work your lens correctly. Below are a few of the best tips when it comes to sports photography,

3 Sports Photography Tips

1. Use the Right Equipment

Aim for DSLR or mirrorless digital cameras as these offer more digital cameracontrol and higher image quality.  Zoom lenses over 200 millimeters are optimal when it comes to shooting sports. They allow you to focus on the subject at different lengths depending on how close or far they are from your camera.

2. Keep the Sun Behind You

Learning how to manipulate natural light is key when it comes to taking successful photographs. It’s best to shoot on a cloudy day, but unlike other types of photography, you can’t choose when and where the games are. The sun should be behind the subject to ensure the best exposure. Placing the sun in front of the subject will create a silhouette style photo.

3. Anticipate the Shots

Sports photography involves capturing the action, which means you’ll have to anticipate movements that your subject will make. Rather than placing an athlete in the center of your photo, put yourself in position, and take several continuous shots so you can choose the most dynamic images.
