Even though the freezer is usually part of the refrigerator, it typically receives less maintenance because it is not used as often. No matter how regularly you open your freezer’s frosty door(s), regular maintenance is required to keep it in excellent condition. Get the basics of freezer maintenance here and contact your local appliance service regarding any serious issues.

5 Tips for Maintaining Your Freezer

1. Clean the Condenser Coils

appliance serviceVacuum the unit’s condenser coils every three months, or once a month if you live in a home with numerous pets. Coils coated in dust cannot sufficiently cool refrigerant for unit circulation, causing the appliance to run hotter and use more energy. Move your fridge/freezer unit to access the condenser coils on the back or remove the grill if they are in the front. Unplug the appliance before using the brush attachment on your vacuum.

2. Keep It Full

Maintain a freezer that is halfway, if not completely, full to stabilize the temperature and lower energy consumption. It is easier for food to stay frozen when it surrounded by other chilled items, which prevents re-freezing issues and higher energy bills. Inefficient freezers that work extra hard also require appliance services more often and wear out faster.

3. Defrost or Clean the Drain Hole

Defrost your freezer when the ice on the sides is a ½ inch or wider. Remove the frozen contents to coolers or another freezer and keep the unit’s door open until the ice has completely melted. Use towels to catch the melting ice and defrost the freezer at least once a year for the best results. If you are working with an auto defroster, check and clean the drain hole and pan every three months to ensure proper drainage.

4. Wipe It Down

Clean your freezer twice a year. Unplug the appliance, transfer its contents to containers, and wipe down the walls using a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar. It cleans as well as disinfects. Use the mixture on any shelves as well--remove and clean them for the best results. Dry the freezer thoroughly before plugging it back in.

5. Maintain a Proper Temperature

Keep your freezer away from the wall and any light sources to prevent overheating and efficiency issues. Set the temperature to 0 degrees Fahrenheit and check the rubber gaskets on the door regularly to make certain cold air is not escaping. Have your local appliance service replace the gaskets as part of your next refrigerator/freezer inspection, if necessary.
