Propane is liquid petroleum gas, and it’s used to heat buildings, cook food, and fuel vehicles. There are specific guidelines in place that outline where a tank should be located to increase efficiency and safety. Here is a guide to where the more common types of residential propane tanks should be stored.

20-Pound Tanks

20-pound propane tanks are often used for outdoor barbecue grills and patio heating elements. When full, they hold around five gallons. Because they are small and fuel another item that is also small, the two need to be placed in close proximity to one another.

100-Pound Tanks

A 100-pound propane tank has a variety of home uses, providing heat sources for fireplaces, dryers, and gas ranges and stoves. Able to hold around 100 gallons, these tanks are often ordered in pairs, so when one runs out, an automatic regulator switches over to the other tank. 100-pound tanks must be at least three feet from a door or window and at least five feet from the ignition source.

420-Pound Tanks

propane420-pound tanks heat furnaces, water heaters, generators, and pools, among many other household appliances. When filled to 80% capacity, these tanks hold around 100 gallons of propane. They should be placed at a minimum of five feet from a door or window and a minimum of 10 feet from the source of ignition.

500- & 1000-Gallon Tanks

Both of these larger capacity tanks fuel whole homes, from furnaces and dryers to generators and pool heaters. They are available in either above-ground or below-ground varieties. They must be placed at least 10 feet away from any building and 10 feet away from any property lines. They must also be at least 10 feet from the source of ignition.

To care for your propane tanks, be sure to keep them clean and clear of debris; store smaller tanks in an upright position when not in use; and check the gauges frequently to maintain adequate supplies.
