If you’re a truck driver, you constantly run the risk of incurring work injuries, whether you’re behind the wheel or moving objects outside the truck. This only underscores the importance of safety awareness for truckers. To ensure you’re taking the proper precautions on the job, learn about three common injuries for truckers and how to prevent them.

Common Work Injuries for Truckers

1. Musculoskeletal Injurieswork injuries

Musculoskeletal injuries typically affect truckers' backs, necks, and arms. In a vehicle accident, broken bones, muscle strains, and joint damage aren’t uncommon. However, the dangers of musculoskeletal injury are also ever-present in the course of your daily work. Loading or unloading cargo, using dollies, and performing vehicle maintenance can all strain your musculoskeletal system. To avoid injury, have proper cushioning and support for your spine and wear your seatbelt when driving. Lift with your legs rather than your back, and be mindful of overexerting or overextending when reaching or twisting your body.

2. Falls

A truck driver could fall during the course of delivering a shipment, stepping up or down into a loading area, or getting in and out of the truck. A fall can cause broken bones, cuts and contusions — and, in particularly serious cases, brain injuries or spinal problems. Always take great care when moving from one elevation to another, even if it's just a matter of a few feet. Use handrails and steps, and take the climb up or down as slowly as you need to. Taking an extra few seconds to be careful can have immeasurable benefits.

3. Shifting or Falling Objects

The objects inside your truck — both your cargo and the components of the vehicle itself — can shift at a moment's notice. If not properly secured, they can fall and cause injury. This most often happens when opening the doors to unload cargo or during mechanical repairs. Depending on the size and weight of the item, a falling object could cause anything from a minor scratch to a traumatic brain injury. Take the time to ensure all cargo is secured properly. Make sure dollies and jacks are stored in their rightful places, and vehicle parts are latched into place.
