A funeral service is an emotional time for people of all ages. However, the ceremony may be exceptionally challenging for young children who have never attended one before, which is why many parents battle with whether or not to allow their child to go. When you’re deciding whether or not your child should attend a funeral, here are some questions to keep in mind.

How Old Is the Child?

Perhaps the most significant factor used to determine if a child should attend a funeral is their age. If the child in question is an infant, it might be best to leave them out of the services unless they were asked to be present by the hosting family or decedent. At such a young age, babies are not aware of what is going on. They may also become fussy during the service and distract other mourners. However, children in elementary school have a higher capacity for understanding death and loss, so it may be appropriate for them to attend.

Does the Child Want to Attend?

funeralBefore the service, discuss with your child what they can expect if they attend the funeral. Describe what they may see and how they may feel. Let them know that it’s okay to express emotions. During the conversation, ask them if they want to attend the funeral. If they say yes, they should be allowed to go. However, they say no or express fear or discomfort, do not force them to attend. If they are hesitant, ask them about their concerns and answer their questions as best as you can.

Will the Child Benefit From Attending the Funeral?

Going to the ceremony and burial will give children a chance to mourn, express their emotions, and say their goodbyes to their loved one. It may also be comforting to your young one to be around family during such an emotional time. Funerals tend to bring relatives and friends together, and your child will have a chance to connect with extended family members. Attending funerals and memorial services at a young age can also teach them how to deal with loss in the future.
