Older homes have character and style that many owners fall in love with. Unfortunately, some of the most charming older houses are not particularly energy-efficient due to changes in standards since they were built. Here are a few ways to update your home design for better efficiency.

How to Update an Older Home for Efficiency

1. Update All of the Windows & Doors

Old windows and doors can be quite inefficient, with energy from heating and cooling systems seeping out through broken seals and gaps that also lead to drafts. Newer windows and doors, especially those that are Energy Star® certified, reduce energy loss, which helps lower greenhouse emissions that are produced when powering homes. Inside temperatures remain more constant, and your utility bills are reasonable.

2. Install New Appliances

Even water-based appliances like dishwashers and washing machines require less water and finish their tasks in less time. All of this leads to a reduction in energy usage, which can lead to huge savings for large appliances.

3. Upgrade the Heating & Cooling System

If your older home already has an HVAC system installed, check how old the equipment is. A newer version will not use as much energy, which also protects components for the duration of their life span since there’s less wear and tear. Some older properties may not have duct heating and cooling installed, but there are options such as ductless that can be installed in each room; this option is extremely energy-efficient and can be customized to the comfort of each room’s specific needs.

4. Replace Lighting

Outdated lighting fixtures consume a lot of energy and may not accept newer bulbs that can save you money. Updating the fixtures can also give your home design an exciting boost in style. Check light fittings and swap any that are older. If they are still in good shape, switch to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs instead of tungsten. LED bulbs use less energy and last longer than traditional options.

5. Improve Insulation

Inspect attics, crawlspaces, and walls for insulation and replace any areas that are missing or inefficient. Especially in the attic where heat loss can affect the rest of your home’s efficiency, check that there is enough insulation so that energy doesn’t escape through your roof.
