Cavities are one of the most prevalent health problems in the United States. In fact, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 92% of adults have had a cavity on a tooth. As a result, it’s important to understand what causes them and how to prevent them, including seeing a dentist regularly.

A Guide to Cavities

What Are Cavities & What Causes Them?

Cavities, also known as caries, are permanently damaged areas on your teeth that often appear as tiny holes. They are a form of decay that stems from damage to your inner or outer tooth layers. The damage is caused by a combination of bacteria, saliva, and food residue. Sugary or starchy snacks are especially bad for the teeth because they turn into acid and sticky plaque that coats your enamel. If you don’t brush after eating or drinking, the plaque can harden into tartar, which dissolves your enamel and creates cavities.

How Does Your Dentist Know If You Have a Cavity?

dentistYou should schedule regular dental cleanings, as your dentist can check for decay or other problems. Typically, they will ask if you’ve noticed any tell-tale signs between appointments. The obvious clues are visible holes or black or brown stains on the surface of your teeth. Even if you don’t have those, decay can still occur beneath the surface. Watch for toothaches, sharp pain, or increased sensitivity, especially when eating hot or cold foods.

How Can You Prevent Cavities?

Brush with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day. If you are prone to cavities, brush after every meal or snack. Similarly, if food gets stuck in your teeth, floss or rinse your mouth out to remove any residue. Also, drink more water and fewer sugary drinks, as this will help you rinse your teeth and avoid additional acids.
