When you’re planning a wall-to-wall carpeting project, you probably give a lot of consideration to the type of carpet you want to install. But have you thought about the padding that goes underneath that carpet? Read on to learn more about the importance of carpet padding.

What Is Carpet Padding?

Padding is often an overlooked aspect of carpet installation, but it’s crucial in extending the life of your carpeting. Padding protects the underside of the carpet from friction against the bare floor beneath and cushions the carpet against the impact of foot traffic and furniture. That cushioning effect also makes the carpet more comfortable to walk on. Additionally, carpet padding adds an extra layer of protection to insulate your floor from drafts and helps to dampen sound, which is particularly helpful for upstairs rooms. Carpet padding can make your carpet easier to clean, because it raises the carpet slightly, allowing your vacuum cleaner to remove dirt more efficiently.

Selecting the Right Carpet Padding

A standard foam pad that comes free with your carpet installation might be fine for a guest room or other areas that don’t get used much, but may not hold up to regular foot traffic. Frothed foam carpet padding comes with a higher price tag, but it’s so durable it may last through two carpet installations. Rebond padding offers a good combination of value and durability, but be aware that using it may void the warranty on some types of carpeting, particularly loop styles. If you or your children often sit on the floor, consider memory foam padding for maximum comfort. A thickness of 7/16” is pretty standard for carpet padding, but some short-pile and Berber carpets actually perform better with a thinner pad.
