An effective commercial sign draws the eye, communicates what type of service your business performs, and helps customers find your premises. However, most municipalities have strict signage regulations to prevent visual clutter and keep traffic and pedestrians safe. Cincinnati, OH is just such a city. Below are some facts you should keep in mind when designing your outdoor signs.

What You Should Know About Cincinnati Sign Regulations

Ground Signs

Signs in Cincinnati, OHGround signs include any signage not supported by a building, in which the support structure stands upon and is permanently anchored into the ground. They may not be erected closer than 15 feet from the lot line or right-of-way. Signs taller than 30 feet must be set back at least a distance of 1/2 the height of the sign. Only a single ground sign is permitted for every 400 feet of lot frontage, and any second sign erected—for instance on a corner lot or on a long property frontage—may not exceed 50% of the maximum sign size for that area. Each sign face counts against the total allowable sign area.

Projecting Signs

Projecting signs are supported wholly or in part by a building or a pole extending from a building.  This type of sign must be at least 10 feet above a walking surface and 16 feet above a private drive. It cannot be installed above the roofline and must be eight feet or less in height and 3.5 feet in width. It may not extend outward more than 6 feet from the attached wall.

Prohibited Signs

The city prohibits several signs deemed to be safety hazards or otherwise inappropriate. These include signs placed in public parks or on public property without municipal permission; signs on any traffic or utility pole, street sign, or tree; signs that might obstruct the view of traffic; and signs that are moving, flashing or animated, including balloons, searchlights, or projections.
