Even if you’re an animal lover with pets of your own, there are some critters you might not want hanging around your home. In fact, some of them can damage your property, costing you hard-earned time and money. If you’ve been noticing patches of upturned grass and mounds of dirt around your landscape, it’s time to reclaim your home with the help of an animal control service. Use the following guide to find out which creatures are digging up your lawn.

3 Animals That Could Be Digging Up Your Lawn

1. Squirrels

Many of the times you spot a squirrel in a park or in the forest, they’re either looking for food, eating it, or hoarding it. While it might be cute to watch them eat nuts, their diet can create numerous landscape problems. For example, if you plant bulbs or corms in your garden, squirrels will dig them up and eat them. If they want to hide found food in the ground, they’ll dig up your lawn to create their own hiding spots.

2. Skunks

If there are holes in your lawn, inspect them closely—those that are cone-shaped holes and about three to four inches wide are the handiwork of a skunk. If you grow corn on your property, you might also notice damage to the lower ears, a reflection of the animal’s height.

3. Woodchucks

Also known as groundhogs, woodchucks spend much of their time in underground burrows, which can be upward of 50 feet long. They hibernate, mate, and raise their young in these tunnels and chambers, and they come up through holes in the ground. If you spot large holes—about 10 to 12 inches in diameter—in your lawn, or beneath a shed, as well as dirt mounds, you probably need animal control to address the woodchuck population. These animals also like to enjoy tomatoes and the tops of carrots in vegetable gardens.
