The Lutheran Church was established when Martin Luther criticized the actions of the Roman Catholic Church and began the Protestant Reformation in the early 1500s. What Does the Lutheran Church Believe?

1. Scripture

Lutherans view the Bible as the written Word of God, and as such, it’s given sole authority over their doctrine. In other words, everything the Lutheran Church believes is firmly rooted in specific examples from Scripture. Lutherans also read the Bible to learn about God’s love, grace, and mercy, and they look to it for instruction throughout their lives.

2. Sacraments

Lutherans observe two sacraments, or rites, which they believe have been commanded by God and hold the promise of His grace. The first is baptism, which is often performed on infants as a means of welcoming them into God’s kingdom. The second is communion, during which members of the church eat bread and drink wine. This is symbolic of the body and blood of Christ and commemorates the Last Supper.

3. Salvation

The Lutheran Church says that a person is saved by faith in Christ alone. Anyone who believes in Jesus’ life, crucifixion, and resurrection is blameless in God’s eyes, despite their sinful nature. While Lutherans encourage good works, they don’t think a person can earn their way into Heaven by volunteering, donating money, ministering to others, or performing any other meaningful tasks throughout their life.
