Severe tooth stains, chips, injuries, and decay are among the most common reasons for dental crowns. The tooth-shaped-and-colored caps preserve and fortify what’s left of original teeth while also correcting chewing issues and contributing to beautiful smiles. And while these tooth restorations initially took weeks to create, same-day crowns make a perfect smile possible in one visit.

What Are Same-Day Crowns & What Are The Benefits?

The Process

Most same-day crowns use Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC®) technology and involve the dentist taking 3D images of your teeth using a tiny camera. These images take the place of the impressions traditional crowns require. Once the dentist captures the pictures and makes exact measurements, including all fissures, indentations, and ridges, the dentist uses computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) machines to create crowns from ceramic blocks. The milling machine takes a few minutes to produce custom crowns that match the color of your real teeth. The dentist then glues the crowns to your teeth to complete the process. And because the tooth replicas are so precise, there is little risk of your same-day crowns feeling awkward.

The Benefits

Traditional crowns require at least two dental visits. The first requiressame-day crowns taking impressions of your teeth and providing you with temporary crowns while the second relates to applying their real counterparts. Multiple appointments can mean time off work and extra stress, especially if your dentist is not local. Same-day crowns eliminate these issues and are arguably more attractive than traditional metal options since they provide a natural look. There is also no need to use unpleasant-tasting dental putty to adhere these restorations to teeth, and many patients remark how comfortable same-day crowns feel.
