If you're new to sewing, get ready to experience all the fun, challenges, and rewards that go along with this age-old skill. Amid the excitement, it can be easy to overlook one crucial component of smart sewing: safety. Sewing machines are sophisticated pieces of equipment, so bear the following tips in mind.

Do:

Check the power cord.

A power cord should be in sturdy shape to supply the sewing machine with the electricity it needs. Frayed, broken, or otherwise damaged cords don't just compromise the efficacy of the machine, but they're also fire hazards. Check to ensure the cord is intact; that there are no frays, cracks, or loose casings; and that the prongs are solid and unbent. Also, unplug the machine after each use.

Use finger guards.

Whether a beginner or a pro, everyone pokes their fingers on a needle from time to time. If the needle penetrates deep enough, it could draw blood and jeopardize the fabric — not to mention it hurts. Invest in a thimble to protect fingertips while you work.

Sew across pins.

Even the most state-of-the-art sewing machine isn't meant to sew over pins. The force of the needle can easily break pins, which can cause painful cuts if you handle them. The machine itself could also break. To prevent this, keep part of your focus one step ahead. As the fabric approaches the presser foot, let up on the pedal and remove the pins.

Forget to tie back your hair.

Sewing machines move with astounding speed, especially once you're concentrated on your work. If you have long hair, always tie it back and away from your workspace. Loose hair can quickly get caught up in a machine, leading to discomfort for you and a potential breakdown of the machine.
