Despite being one of the most important parts of the vehicle, many motorists don’t fully understand how the braking system works. It’s often not given much thought until there’s a problem. However, taking care of the brakes is one of the more important auto maintenance tasks. By learning about the system’s crucial components, you’ll be more capable of discussing issues with a brake service expert.

A Guide to the Braking System

1. Pads

Created with long-lasting, heat-resistant composite materials, the brake pads rub against the discs or rotors to provide the friction that helps slow the vehicle down. As they get worn down, they start making squealing and grinding noises. These are signs you should call an auto maintenance professional.

2. Discs

The metal discs are situated between the actual wheel and the hub, and they provide the surfaces for the pads to do their job. They are either one piece or vented, which is two discs joined together to provide additional cooling.

3. Brake Lines

Auto MaintenanceThey are thin metal pipes that run throughout the braking system, and their job is to transfer the brake fluids that allow the other parts to function without overheating. If a line cracks or you notice leaking fluid, address the issue right away.

4. Calipers

Calipers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all use hydraulically actuated pistons; these force the pads into contact with the discs, creating that slowing friction. They are fairly resilient and, therefore, don’t need to be replaced often.

5. Pedal

None of these parts are able to do their jobs without the driver pressing the brake pedal. Once this is done, however, it forces the pistons into the narrow cylinder filled with the fluids. The liquids then move through the lines until they activate the pads, which rub against the discs.
