When you are charged with a criminal offense, your attorney will look at the nature of the crime and evidence to shape your defense. Their efforts could result in a plea bargain with reduced charges or dismissal of the case. When you need a savvy defense, below are a few ways they might approach the situation.

Possible Strategies for Your Criminal Defense

1. Tell the Truth

If you committed a crime, tell your defense attorney the truth. This will make it difficult for a prosecutor to try and catch you in a lie later. By knowing your version of events, the counselor will present you in the best light possible. If multiple people were charged with the crime, for example, they will reach out to witnesses and present other evidence that corroborates your minimal involvement in the incident.

2. Prove the Actions Were Justifiable

attorneyUnder certain circumstances, the attorney might try to prove your actions were warranted. For example, the lawyer may argue the crime was committed in self-defense. For example, you may have injured a burglar during a home invasion to prevent harm to the people inside. Actions can also be justifiable if the crime was committed in a state of duress. This could include someone telling you to rob a bank when they are holding your spouse or kids hostage.

3. Deny Involvement

If you are fully confident in your innocence, an attorney will work to prove you weren’t involved in the crime. In an attempt to get all the charges dropped, they will work on an alibi. This includes talking to witnesses, finding video surveillance footage, and looking for other evidence that can prove you were in a different place when the crime was committed.
