In 2018, more than 62 million people received Social Security disability income benefits (SSDI). The program provides supplemental income to those who need financial help, including those with visual impairments, adults and children with disabilities, and individuals 65 and older. Filing a claim for the benefits requires significant time and paperwork, but requests can be denied. Social Security law attorneys share the top reasons why claims are turned down.

Why a Social Security Disability Claim May Be Denied

1. Fail to Follow Therapy

If you neglect to follow your doctor’s treatment plan, your claim will likely be denied. SSDI examiners need to see any documentation that continues to show your disability prevents you from working. This includes not submitting current records of doctor’s visits, physical therapy appointments, and other related records that track your treatment.

2. Earn Too Much Income

The Social Security Administration has a work income threshold called substantial gainful activity (SGA). This is the amount of money you can earn each month to be eligible for SSDI benefits. If your earnings exceed SGA, your claim could be denied. For 2019, the SGA monthly limit is $1,220 for non-visually impaired persons and $2,040 for the visually-impaired. Social Security law only considers income earned from work in the application process. Other benefits, investments, and passive income are not considered.

3. Not Enough Medical Proof

Social Security lawApprovals for SSDI rely heavily on documents the applicant submits from their doctors. Specifically, the medical records must show that your disability makes it impossible to work. Social Security law attorneys urge clients to gather as much medical proof when filing for benefits.

4. Temporary Disability

Another common reason for an SSDI claim denial is the duration of the applicant’s disability. The impairment must typically be severe enough to last more than a year or if it will result in one’s death. If medical evidence shows you’re expected to recover from the disability within a year, your claim may be denied.
