Being a DIYer is rewarding in many ways. You’ll enjoy the pride of creation, save money on your projects, and build sweat equity in your property. Safety equipment is essential as you work on your projects. Keep each of the items below in your workshop and wear them as you work.

Must-Have Safety Equipment Checklist

1. Safety Glasses

One of the most critical pieces of safety equipment is glasses. Safety glasses are designed to protect your eyes from flying debris. Get a few pairs that are OSHA-regulated and have a wraparound side to protect you from impacts on the side. Get at least one set that is tinted for when you work outdoors.

2. Gloves

Work gloves can be quite comfortable if you avoid the bulkier pairs. Look for leather, canvas or cloth with reinforcements on the palms and fingertips. If you’re working with more dangerous machinery such as saws, use a thicker leather glove.

3. Hearing Protection

Working with power tools is often loud. This noise could cause permanent hearing damage if you don’t wear protection. Earmuffs provide the most protection, but a few pairs of earplugs will be useful to have on hand because they are so portable.

4. Masks

Allergens such as dust, sawdust, and even mold will be present in the air while you’re working. Breathing these will cause serious respiratory issues. Keep dust masks on hand that have an N95 certification. If you ever do demolition work, a respirator mask is necessary.

5. Bootssafety equipment

Work boots are reinforced to protect your toes and provide a non-slip grip so you can move around safely. Demolition or other high-risk projects call for steel-toed boots. For lighter DIY work, composite toe protection is sufficient.
