Take a moment to think about the metal tank that is your water heater. Metal and water are traditionally incompatible since the latter creates rust in the former. So how does a standard water heater remain corrosion-free? The answer lies with the anode rod. Here’s what you should know about this rod and why you need to check it periodically.

What Is the Anode Rod?

The sacrificial anode rod in your water heater prevents internal corrosion by attracting corrosive elements in the water. The rod subsequently rusts over time to keep the tank liner intact for as long as possible. Rods are made of magnesium, aluminum, zinc, or several metals combined. They also feature wrapping, such as steel wire.

What Are the Signs of Deterioration?

Follow your owners manual for instructions, which should include draining some of the water, so you can see the condition of the rod. It’s best to check the part at least every two years. The rod will look corroded or “chewed” if it needs to be replaced. Other signs to look for include inconsistent water temperatures, frequent faucet aerator clogs, rusty-looking water, and hot water with a sulfur or “rotten egg” odor.

While anode rods last up to five years, certain factors cause them to corrode faster. If you use a water softener, for example, the salts replacing the minerals in the water accelerate corrosion. Highly acidic and hot water can also cause the rod to rust at a faster rate. If you keep your water heater at a high temperature, expect to get the rod changed annually. The same is true of acidic water and softener use. The materials the rod is made with also affect the corrosion rate, as some metals rust more quickly than others.
