There are four main classes of driver's licenses in the state of Louisiana. Understanding what types of vehicle operation fall under each class will help you find the right license for your needs. It will also ensure you submit the appropriate legal documents and application forms in order to obtain your license. Here’s a closer look at the four categories.

Class E

Class E covers noncommercial, personal vehicle use for drivers 17 and older. This is the most common type of license. The primary vehicle must weigh less than 10,000 lbs. Class E also allows license-holders to operate recreational vehicles and farm vehicles within 150 miles of their property. Class E licenses include learner's permits, which Louisiana residents can obtain at the age of 15 with the completion of the appropriate driver education training. Among the legal documents needed for a Class E license are proof of residency and proof of legal residence in the country.

Class D

legal documentsClass D is commonly known as a chauffeur's license. Those 17 and older are permitted to operate a commercial vehicle up to 26,001 lbs. that can transport up to 15 people, including the driver. Taxis, private car services, and airport or hotel shuttle vans all require a Class D license. To qualify for Class D, bring your Class E license, proof of auto insurance, and legal documents stating proof of residency to the Office of Motor Vehicles; you will be required to take a chauffeur's skills exam and vision test.

Classes A, B, & C

Licenses in Classes A, B, and C are for the operation of commercial vehicles and are available to drivers 18 or older. Class A is needed to drive a vehicle with a weight of 26,001 pounds or greater that tows a trailer over 10,000 lbs. Class B is required for a vehicle with a weight of 26,001 pounds or greater that tows a trailer less than 10,000 pounds. Class C is for vehicles that carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver; Class C drivers can also transport certain hazardous materials. You need to pass a CDL test to acquire any of these three licenses.

Class M

Class M is a motorcycle endorsement. Louisiana does not issue separate motorcycle licenses; the endorsement is added to your existing driver's license. You must be 18 or older and have successfully completed a test of skills and knowledge or an Office of Motor Vehicles-approved training program.
