Spin classes are an excellent workout for pregnant women. As a low-impact exercise, most women can safely partake in spinning once receiving the all-clear from their doctor. However, there are other steps to take to reduce risks while exercising, as highlighted below.

4 Safety Steps for Pregnant Women in Spin Class

1. Tell the Instructor You’re Pregnant

Spin class instructors are known for pushing their students to the limit. When you let the instructor know you’re pregnant before class begins, they’ll encourage you to take a break when you need to. They’ll even suggest a pace that is comfortable for you.

2. Watch Your Breathing

Your instructor will suggest breathing techniques to ensure you remain healthy and safe throughout the workout.

3. Be Mindful of Back Pain

Before getting started, set up the bike in a way that is most comfortable on your lower back. Make sure the handlebars are pulled closer toward your body so you don’t have to lean forward to reach them, as this can put pressure on your lower back.

4. Drink Plenty of Water

It’s recommended that pregnant women drink six to eight medium glasses—or 200ml—of fluids per day, including water. Make sure that you don’t skip out on water, especially on days you plan to attend spin classes. If you feel faint, thirsty, or you have dry mouth and eyes, you’re not consuming enough water. Fill a reusable water bottle before your workout and have it handy for easy access.
