Wearing glasses is a new experience for many children, and it’s one that will require a period of adjustment. Corrective eyewear will improve the way they see the world, but the frames may feel awkward to them at first, and the face they see in the mirror will undergo a change. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to encourage your child to wear their new glasses.

How to Help a Child Adjust to Eyeglasses

1. Let Them Choose the Frames

Unless a specific type of frame is recommended by the eye doctor, allow your child to pick out the frames that most appeal to them. They’ll have to wear the glasses every day, so it only makes sense that they should have input on the color, shape, and style of the frames. This will help them feel empowered and part of the process, meaning they’ll be more likely to want to wear their new glasses.

2. Wear Your Own Glasses

glassesA parent who normally wears contact lenses or isn't consistent with their own eyeglass use should start wearing their frames regularly. Children often follow the example set for them, and when they see you wearing glasses as part of your daily routine, they may be more apt to follow suit. Don't call particular attention to the fact you're wearing glasses; just make them a regular part of your wardrobe, at least for a while. This way, kids will see that it's no big deal and that frames integrate seamlessly into everyday life.

3. Establish a New House Rule

Kids at school can sometimes be unkind toward a classmate who suddenly starts wearing glasses, so the child might take them off at school. As a parent, you only have so much control over this. But, at home, you have more control. Establish a new house rule that whenever the child is at home, they must wear their frames. If they don't, there will be penalties, such as loss of video game privileges for a certain amount of time. Enforce the rule consistently until the child understands that wearing glasses is the behavior expected of them and becomes a routine habit. Once it does, they’ll be more likely to wear them at school, too.
