Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that connect the ankle bones are damaged as a result of a forceful rolling, turning, or twisting. A sprained ankle can produce significant pain, swelling, and bruising, as well as a limited range of motion in the foot. Below are some tips for treating this common condition at home.

4 Steps for Ankle Sprain Healing

1. Rest

Aim to stay off a sprained ankle as much as possible. Any additional weight, even one's normal body weight, exerts stress on the already weakened ankle and inhibits healing. When you need to move around, use crutches.

Ice reduces blood flow to decrease swelling and temporarily numbs nerves to reduce pain. Immediately after suffering an ankle sprain, apply an ice pack for up to 30 minutes every two to three hours. People with foot-related diabetic, vascular, or nerve issues should consult a doctor to ensure ice is a safe home treatment.

3. Wrap

Another way to minimize swelling is to wrap the ankle lightly in an elastic bandage or brace. When using a bandage, start by wrapping the toes and proceed by winding the bandage around the foot, heel, ankle, and then a few inches above the ankle. Don’t wrap too tightly so as not to cut off circulation.

4. Elevate

When you raise a sprained ankle to a higher level than your heart, gravity naturally pulls fluid away from the sprain and minimizes swelling. This is especially important during sleep since the long hours spent in a prone position can cause fluid to accumulate. Prop the foot on a few pillows until it reaches a point above the heart.
