Psoriasis is a dermatological ailment known for causing extremely dry, itchy, and scaly skin. Without proper care, it can hamper your everyday quality of life. Luckily, dermatologists are now able to provide a diversity of treatment options to help you live with the condition comfortably. Find out more below.

Causes & Symptoms

Psoriasis appears to be an autoimmune condition. Overactive T-cells, which normally defend your body against foreign viruses or bacteria, instead attack healthy skin cells. Dermatologists aren't clear on just why the T-cells malfunction, but research continues.

dermatologistSymptoms of psoriasis include skin so dry that it cracks and bleeds, red patches covered with grayish scales, and itching or burning. Depending on the type of psoriasis, additional symptoms may arise—for instance, psoriatic arthritis which also causes stiffness and swelling in the joints.

Treatment Options

Topical treatments applied directly to the skin are one way to address psoriasis. These slow down cell reproduction, decreasing T-cell response and related inflammation. Over-the-counter creams are available, and a dermatologist can prescribe stronger options if these don’t work.

Medications for psoriasis include biologic drugs administered via either injection and sometimes an IV. These target specific parts of your immune system, blocking the T-cells from attacking the skin. Another option is systemic medication, which works throughout the entire body. An oral retinoid such as Accutane®, which slows skin cell growth, is one example.

Such solutions may be offered in conjunction with phototherapy, which requires exposing the skin to ultraviolet light. This must be done consistently and in the controlled environment of a dermatologist’s office for maximum efficacy.
