New windows are investments that can last for decades, but only if you maintain them diligently. With proper upkeep, they’ll look attractive and function well for longer. Follow the guide below to make the most of your new installations.

How to Maintain New Windows

1. Seal Drafts

Check for drafts every season; hold a hand close to the seals to feel for moving air or temperature changes. Caulk small drafts or spray foam insulation for larger ones. If you see damage on the seals around the windows, have them replaced.

2. Repaint

Wooden and metal frames will need to be repainted to maintain their appearance and protect the material from the elements. Apply a new coat every three to four years — or immediately if you see any cracks or peeling paint. Do not paint over moving parts, as this could paint the window shut.

windows3. Clean Regularly

Routine cleaning will wash away the dirt that damages glass and deteriorates the seal. Wipe down wooden frames with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Wash aluminum or vinyl frames with a mild detergent. When you clean the glass, clean the casing and the surrounding wall area, as well.

4. Fix Damage Immediately

When you inspect for drafts, look for signs of visible damage, as well. This includes cracks, holes, or splinters. Dual-paned windows may start to fog when the seal fails. Rot in wooden frames should be immediately removed and filled with epoxy putty.
