Indoor comfort is something every homeowner wants. Mini-split systems may not get as much attention as their traditional air conditioning unit counterparts, but they should. Not only are mini-split systems efficient at keeping rooms cool, but they also offer additional benefits.

What Is a Mini-Split System?

When you think of the typical air conditioner, you likely think of units that transport cool air through houses via air ducts. A mini-split system is a ductless solution. As the name implies, it is a smaller and more compact solution to home cooling. These systems are placed in single rooms and focused on that room alone rather than the entire house.

How Does This System Work?

The name of this unit doesn’t just reflect its reduced size. The name, mini-split system, also shows how this system works. It’s split between two parts. The indoor unit mounted on a wall or ceiling, with chords running to an outside unit. The outside part acts as a compressor/condenser, and sends refrigerant via the tubes. The indoor unit acts as an evaporator. The two can be connected via a small opening, which must fit only the refrigerant tubes, drainage line, and power/communication cables.

Advantages of Using Mini-Split Systems

mini-split systemsThe biggest advantage of mini-split systems is their reduced size, making it flexible enough for a variety of spaces like apartments, garages, cabins, even small storage rooms that need ventilation. Additionally, energy efficiency because of small size means they require less energy to operate.

Secondly, in areas where temperature is uneven, these little machines are convenient. Duct systems can’t reach all areas of a house adequately, so mini-split systems can be added in homes that either don’t have duct systems, or homes where limited ducts prevent comfortable airflow between rooms.
