When dog walking during the summer, your pup is more at risk for overheating. Learn about the signs of heatstroke and how to cool down your canine companion in the following guide.

Common Symptoms

Since dogs have high body temperatures and thick coats of fur, they tend to be sensitive to warm weather. Some common symptoms of overheating include heavy panting, weakness, increased heart rate, drooling, vomiting, and unconsciousness.

When you observe any of the above symptoms of overheating, immediately move your dog to a shaded area or cool indoor location. Provide them with a few ounces of water at a time to prevent nausea and vomiting. If available, use a garden hose to spray cool water onto your pup, especially the head, neck, and undersides of the legs. Otherwise, have your dog sit in front of a fan or air conditioning vent while you call your veterinarian to ask for further instructions.

Prevention Methods

Hydration is key to preventing overheating, so carry a water bottle and travel bowl with you during dog walking outings. Make sure your canine has access to shady spots outside, and avoid walking on hot pavement to avoid burning their paws. Trim your dog’s fur down to about an inch during the summer, and limit outdoor play sessions to 15 to 20 minutes on particularly hot days. When you schedule pet boarding, let the facility know if your pup is prone to overheating, so they take the proper precautions.
