With proper care and maintenance, a quality HVAC system can last for anywhere from 10 to 20 years. If your air conditioner happens to be more than a decade old, however, you may be aware that when it comes time to upgrade, you’ll have to buy a model with a different kind of refrigerant. The entire industry is phasing out R-22, which many older systems are still using. Since this refrigerant will be obsolete by 2030, here’s what you should know before calling an HVAC contractor to replace an older air conditioner.

What Is R-410A Refrigerant?

As part of the Clean Air Act, the United States has committed to phasing out various substances that deplete the ozone layer, including R-22, a commonly used refrigerant in air conditioners. Phasing out R-22 is possible because of R-410A, a chlorine-free refrigerant that’s environmentally friendly and promotes better air quality. Because it’s only compatible with high-efficiency systems, though, it can’t simply replace R-22 in an existing unit. Instead, the entire HVAC system—or at least its critical components—must be upgraded to a model that uses R-410A.

How Can I Make the Switch?

HVAC contractorManufacturers had to stop producing HVAC units that used R-22 in 2010. Fortunately, making the switch to R-410A will be relatively simple. When it comes time to replace your air conditioner, your HVAC contractor can recommend a comparable model that uses R-410A instead. If you don’t want to replace the entire air conditioner, it may be possible to retrofit the system; this typically entails replacing the coils in the outdoor unit.

Regardless of the approach, it’s wise to make the switch sooner rather than later. As of next year, it will be illegal to produce R-22. In other words, you can expect the cost of repairing units that still use this refrigerant to skyrocket because contractors will have to use recycled R-22 to recharge them. If your system was installed after 2010, though, it probably already contains R-410A, so repairs will be easier.
