Social isolation is a serious health concern for older folks, increasing their risks for dementia, depression, and premature mortality, among other issues. For this reason, it is essential to continue visiting an aging parent after they've moved into an assisted living facility. Understandably, seeing Mom or Dad in a new environment may take some getting used to. Below are a few tips to help make these experiences beneficial and comfortable for everyone.

A Guide to Visiting a Parent in Assisted Living

1. Plan Your Visit in Advance

Dropping in unexpectedly on a parent in assisted living is nice for an occasional surprise, but try to plan your visits as much as possible. There are times of the day in which many seniors naturally have more energy, such as mornings and immediately after lunch. If your parent is involved in their senior living community, there may be daily activities they'd like to attend. So, check with them in advance to ensure your appointed visiting time is convenient. Or, schedule a regular visit on a specific day and time; this will give you both something to look forward to, too.

2. Bring an Activity

One ideal way to do that is to bring along an easy, low-stress activity to engage in with them. Playing a card or board game, engaging in a simple arts-and-crafts project, or walking around the grounds are just a few suggestions that require minimal energy but offer opportunities for fun and conversation.

3. Keep an Eye on the Time

Be mindful of your parent's energy levels and health. Don't hesitate to check in with them to see how they're feeling or if they need to rest. Be especially conscious of this when kids are present; while any senior will relish seeing their grandchildren, kids can sometimes be exhausting. It's better to have a brief, quality visit than a long, depleting one.
