If your child has recently started a gymnastics program, there are several things you can do to help them grow in this sport. Flexibility is a crucial element of gymnastics, and it can be achieved by practicing daily stretches. To improve your child’s range of motion and help them develop important gymnastics skills, consider incorporating the following three stretches into your daily routine.

Top Stretches to Increase Flexibility

1. Standing Quad

The quads are the large thigh muscles that contribute to running and jumping. By performing standing quad stretches, your child can loosen muscles and widen their range of motion. To perform this exercise, have your child bend one leg back and grab the top of that foot, bringing it as close to their rear as possible. Make sure the knee does not fall out of line with the other leg, as this could result in a less effective stretch. If your child finds it difficult to keep their balance, feel free to let them use a wall or chair for better stability.

2. Hip Flexors

gymnasticsHip flexibility can be incredibly beneficial in gymnastics, making it easier to perform artistic and physical moves, while also improving your child’s overall physical stability. To stretch the hip flexors, have your child lay on their back while keeping both legs in front of them. Next, they’ll bend the knee of one leg and pull the heel up by their waist, continuing to move it forward as their hips allow.

3. Back Twist

Properly stretching the back allows for a reduction in muscle strains due to the physically demanding elements of gymnastics. Have your child complete this stretch by lying flat on their back with their legs out in front. Next, your child will bend their legs and slowly turn their hips to one side, letting their knee lower to the ground slowly. Have them repeat this motion with the other side as well.
