Metal buildings can be an excellent investment for farmers, but when constructing a new pole barn, it’s important to remember ventilation. As warm air rises, especially in a barn or farm building, it can collect under the roof and cause condensation or a buildup of mold and mildew. Luckily, whether you’re just drawing up the plans or halfway through construction, there are a few easy ways to ensure proper ventilation.

3 Methods for Ventilating Pole Barns

1.Vented Ridge

The easiest method for ventilation can be worked into the designs of any new metal roof you’re constructing. Putting a ridge at the top of the ceiling with soffit vents is one of the most efficient ways to use the natural motion of rising warm air while discouraging stagnation.

2.Ventilated Cupolas

pole barnA ventilated cupola is one that’s been installed with a ceiling fan in it. This is a great design for pole barns that will be used for livestock. It’s also great in places where the temperature can vary wildly or there’s a lot of humidity. Modern cupolas come with thermostatically regulated sensors to turn the fans on when the temperature and humidity reach certain points. Ventilated cupolas are expensive at first, but they are one of the most efficient solutions for heat and air control in a barn.

3.Ceiling Fans

If the pole barn has already been constructed, it can be too late to add a vented ridge or build a cupola. Instead, attach ceiling fans beneath the metal roof. Fans should be positioned over any livestock areas and through the center space of the barn—this will move the warm air up and out. And like the cupolas, you can invest in fans that will turn on automatically based on the temperature.
