There are several aspects to consider when calculating the number of packing boxes required for a move. When you look around your home, you’ll realize the flatscreen TV, mattresses, and lamps need protection as well. The following guide covers all the details for a move, including the number of boxes required and other necessities you might not have considered.

Packing Boxes & Other Supplies

Most people just try to fit their oddly shaped items into square cardboard boxes, but there are other container shapes to help with specific items. There are the usual square boxes that range from small to extra large, but there are also wardrobe boxes, lamp boxes, dish boxes, book boxes, and flat-panel TV boxes. Some boxes are kits (TV boxes), while others are differently shaped to meet the needs of a specific object or made of thicker cardboard for heavier items.

Packing BoxesBoxes act as a protective shell, but to further protect the items inside, you have to look at other packing supplies like furniture blankets, packing peanuts, foam wrap, and other forms of padding. If storage is an option for some of the items, then make sure you place them on pallets to protect against flooding.

How Many Packing Boxes Should You Have?

This varies greatly depending on who you ask. Considerations include the number of rooms, square footage of the home, number of people who live there, number of years spent accumulating items, and the lifestyle in which a person collects items. If there’s a big book collection, that throws a monkey wrench into the calculation. A lot of different math equations can be drawn up with all these variables!

Luckily, there are a few averages to help make your move easier. A studio apartment typically requires 15 medium, 13 large, and seven extra-large boxes. A one-bedroom apartment needs 20 medium, 16 large, and eight extra-large boxes. A two-bedroom apartment needs 30 medium, 22 large, and 10 extra-large boxes. A three-bedroom apartment needs 45 medium, 31 large, and 13 extra-large boxes. This is a generalized minimum for two people and can vary depending on whether you live a minimalist or save-everything lifestyle.
