Most people encounter some imperfections in their asphalt at some point as it wears due to traffic and the environment. Parking lots, driveways, and sidewalks can easily develop flaws. These cracks can be divided into a few types, with each coming as the result of a different cause.

Understand These 5 Common Asphalt Cracks

1. Alligator Cracks

asphaltKnown for their resemblance to the animal’s skin, alligator cracks are very common. They’re usually the result of weak spots or poor drainage. They can spread very fast, so treat—or prevent—them by filtering water away from the asphalt and having weak sections replaced.

2. Block Cracking

As tough as the material is, asphalt can be affected by the weather. When the material isn’t strong enough to expand and contract to the climate, large square or rectangular crack patterns can form. To counteract this, ensure asphalt is mixed properly and is strong enough to withstand climate conditions.

3. Transverse Cracks

These horizontal cracks result from poor construction and prolonged periods of temperature change. While some claim harder asphalt is the solution, using a softer grade can help prevent these cracks. A more malleable material can resist pressure from design imperfections and temperature fluctuations.

4. Linear Cracks

These are long vertical cracks that typically occur around the center of the asphalt surface. The culprit behind these is usually poor construction. The best way to avoid them is to have asphalt mixed and installed by professionals.

5. Potholes

While they’re not a crack in the traditional sense, these pavement imperfections are caused when cracks are unattended to over long periods or drainage issues exacerbate minor cracks. To prevent this, treat all cracks quickly. If a pothole is already present, have the area around it drilled and filled in to compensate for any weak areas surrounding the hole.
