While polished concrete flooring isn’t completely maintenance-free, it’s pretty close. That’s one reason this option is so popular in residential and commercial spaces. Polished concrete reflects light, promotes cleaner air since it has no pores or fibers for dust and allergens to collect, and lasts for decades. However, even the most durable floor still needs periodic care.

How to Maintain Polished Concrete Flooring

Dry Mopping

Clean your concrete floor daily with a dust mop or microfiber pad to remove dirt particles. Over time, these accumulate on the floor and dim its beautiful shine. Dry mopping also prevents abrasion. Although polished concrete flooring is durable, it isn’t indestructible. If dust and dirt accumulate, they can eventually wear down the protective layer of polish.

Wet Mopping

Chemical cleaners, such as ammonia and bleach, can damage the polish. For large areas, use an automatic scrubber with a nonabrasive pad to make quick work of lingering dirt and dust.

Spill Control

Polished concrete is tough, but it’s still susceptible to staining if a liquid sits on the surface too long and seeps into the pores. Oil and acidic liquids like vinegar can eat away at the polish, leaving discoloration behind. Clean up spills with water and a neutral cleaner as soon as they happen.
