Homeowners decide to update their windows for many reasons—ranging from aesthetics to energy-efficiency. To make sure the replacements are as functional for your family as possible, you should also put some thought into how you would like them to open. The following guide describes some of the popular styles.

How Different Types of Windows Operate

1. Single-Hung

Single-hung windows open by sliding the bottom section up, while the top part remains stationary. This means that no clearance is necessary. However, this particular style can put a lot of wear on the frame and regular cleaning is needed to prevent it from getting stuck in one of its two positions.

2. Double-Hung

These are able to be opened by sliding either the top pane down or the bottom pane up. They come in a variety of styles for relatively low cost and are the most accommodating of window air conditioners—but are just as subject to frame damage as their single-hung alternatives.

window3. Sliding

These open by being pushed sideways along a track. Though they perform a similar motion to the single- and double-hung options, the strain on the frame is less thanks to the rollers, making these relatively low-maintenance. It is not particularly energy-efficient though.

4. Awning

Awning windows operate by using a mechanism to crank the sash upwards. This allows for wonderful ventilation from outside—but since it flips out, you must make sure there is nothing outside to block it from fully extending.

5. Casement

Similar to the awning style, casement windows also use a crank, except they open to the side, rather than up. Offering good airflow and a non-obstructed view of the outside world, this option is also considered one of the most secure—with strong locks usually set in the frames.
