If you just installed new fiberglass windows in your home, you made an excellent choice. Fiberglass windows are aesthetically pleasing and energy-efficient. But, to make sure your new windows stay shiny and new, there are certain maintenance tips you’ll want to follow. Check out the tips below that window contractors swear by to maintain your new windows.

Do:

Dust them once a week.

Fiberglass windows are relatively low maintenance. But you should dust them once a week to ensure they maintain their crystal-clear appearance. Dust using a microfiber cloth for the best results — other items like rags and paper towels can leave behind lint and other unwanted residues.

Clean the screens.

Place them on a flat surface and gently cleanse them using a mild soap and water. Another option is to rinse them in the shower. Make sure they are completely dry before reattaching them.

Don’t:

Use a harsh cleanser.

Just as it’s important to keep up with cleaning your fiberglass windows, it’s also necessary to do so with the right products. Not all cleaning products are created equally. Harsh chemicals can damage seals and laminate coatings and finishes of new windows. If a stain appears on the window, try washing it with mild soap and water. Use a damp rag or sponge to clean the glass, then use a dry towel to remove any excess moisture.

Forget to maintain the window track and seal.

One of the trickiest parts of caring for fiberglass windows is maintaining the integrity of the track and seal. Rinse the frames with a mild detergent and water using a sponge or, for tougher areas, a soft-bristle brush. Be gentle, as too much moisture, harsh chemicals, or aggressive brushing can cause leaks in the seal of the window frames. Use a vacuum to clean the track and remove any dirt and debris. If you use lubricant spray, don’t apply it directly on the track. Instead, spray it on a towel before wiping. If you notice leaks in your window seal, call a window contractor for service to limit heat transfer at home.
