When starting in vitro fertilization, your doctor will order different blood tests to check your hormone levels. Learn more about four of the most important hormones and how they relate to your fertility.

4 Female Hormones to Test for IVF

1. Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

FSH is one of the first hormones checked when beginning in vitro fertilization. It’s produced in the pituitary gland and brings on ovulation by stimulating follicle growth in the ovaries, which prompts the release of an egg. Lower or higher levels than normal can be the result of diseases such as Turner syndrome or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), pituitary or ovarian failure, menopause, or can naturally rise or fall during a woman’s cycle. Besides allowing the body to run its course, treatments range from prescription medication to surgery in extreme situations.

2. Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

in vitro fertilizationLH is also produced in the pituitary gland and affects ovulation. Causes of LH imbalance include PCOS, a pituitary disorder, stress, anorexia, or malnutrition. Your fertility doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, prescription medication, or surgery to help with in vitro fertilization.

3. Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

TSH is produced in the pituitary gland and can affect the body’s ability to release an egg. High TSH can be the result of diseases such as Grave’s disease or an excess of iodine, while conditions like Hashimoto’s disease can cause low TSH. You can regulate TSH with a prescribed thyroid medication.

4. Estradiol

Estradiol, a form of estrogen, regulates the growth of female sex organs, fat distribution, and bone and joint health. It’s created in the adrenal glands, breasts, and ovaries. If your test results show an imbalance, your doctor might recommend adding certain foods to your diet, such as red grapes, broccoli, whole grains, and mushrooms, or they can prescribe medication to help regulate the hormone.
