Packing up and moving can be risky for fragile objects like framed photos and hanging artwork. Not only are the frames themselves susceptible to damage, but a bump in the road can also shatter the glass, which may scratch or puncture the art itself. Below are a few tips to ensure your framed artwork gets to your new home in one piece.

4 Tips for Transporting Framed Art

1. Use the Right Boxes

Several smaller, lightweight pieces can be packed together safely, but larger pictures should go in their own boxes. To keep the artwork from moving around inside the container, choose a box slightly larger than the contents. Many moving supply stores sell packaging specifically designed for safely transporting framed pictures.

moving2. Protect the Surface

Before putting the picture in the box, use masking tape to make an “X” on the surface of the glass, which will help hold the pieces together if the glass cracks in transit. If your frame doesn’t have glass, use several layers of plastic wrap to protect the surface of the image.

3. Completely Wrap the Artwork

Start by completely wrapping the picture frame in brown packing paper, followed by a layer of bubble wrap. Run the packing tape across the width and length of the object to keep the padding firmly in place. If you’re packing several small frames together, wrap each one individually.

4. Pack the Box

Insert the padded frame into the box, then gently shake the container to see if anything moves around. Add crumpled packing paper in the surrounding space until the contents are securely in place, then seal the box completely. Using too much tape is always better than not using enough. Finally, mark the box on all sides as ‘fragile.’
