Pets love summer just as much as humans do. From rolling in the lush grass to basking in the sun, there’s plenty for your furry family members to enjoy. Unfortunately, more time outside means more vulnerability to pests. Here are a few common pests veterinarians say you should look out for.

3 Pests to Protect Your Pet From this Summer

1. Fleas

Fleas are a problem throughout the year, but the population surges in summer as the heat and humidity speeds up their life cycle. Pets are also more vulnerable to infestation because they spend more time outdoors in the warmer months. When fleas bite pets, the spots itch, so you may notice your pet scratching frequently. Their skin may also appear red and inflamed, and they may have bald spots. When you take your pet for a walk, avoid tall grass and densely wooded areas, particularly in summer, as these areas are most likely to have fleas. However, if your pet still attracts fleas, take them to a veterinarian for an examination to prevent infection and other issues.

2. Ticks

veterinarianTicks are parasitic organisms that live primarily in wooded areas. Like fleas, they feed on blood to survive and often deposit their eggs on animals’ coats, from which they are transferred to the environment. Ticks are also carriers of various diseases, including Lyme disease, which can be transmitted to humans. Lyme disease can take weeks or months to appear and may begin with a rash on the skin. It can progress with migraines, lethargy, and other issues in pets and humans. Use a tick shampoo to kill ticks if your pet already has them. Tick dips, a specific formula to kill ticks on contact, can also help, as can tick collars.

3. Parasites & Bacteria

Parasites and bacteria can be contracted through various mediums, including fleas and ticks. Cat scratch disease, for instance, is a disease spread by cats. It affects humans and is caused by bacteria in flea droppings. Fleas can also transmit tapeworms, which affect animals and humans and inhabit the digestive tract. The best way to prevent bacteria and parasites is to prevent and control fleas and ticks.
