When starting a new job, you may be required to undergo drug testing to secure employment. Before visiting a facility, review your prescription and over-the-counter medications so you can discuss them with your screener. While the company will double-check results to ensure accuracy, the following can produce false positives for restricted drugs at first glance.

What Medications Can Cause False Positives During Drug Tests?

1. Allergy Medication

Over-the-counter allergy medications used to curb symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, congestion, coughing, and eye irritation block the inflammatory process to provide relief. While safe and effective when used properly, this medication can result in a false positive reading for PCP or methadone when drug testing.

Drug Testing2. Cough Suppressants

Cough suppressants in pill or syrup form often contain the drug dextromethorphan. Inform your drug screener if you’re currently taking this medication as it can incorrectly show up on a test as an opiate or PCP.

3. Antidepressants

Some prescriptions used to treat depression or chronic pain regulate the amount of serotonin that’s transmitted within the brain. While an effective way to improve mood and overall quality of life, this drug can show up on a screening as a false positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, or LSD.

4. Antibiotics

When you have a bacterial infection like strep throat or a UTI, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to fight off the virus and curb symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and a sore throat. In a drug testing situation, an individual on antibiotics may test positive for opiates.
