Pets, like humans, are prone to a variety of skin ailments and allergies. Fleas and other parasites can cause inflammation and irritation, benign and malignant growths can develop on the skin, and their sensitive ears can become breeding grounds for yeast. This is why some veterinarians choose to specialize in pet dermatology. Serving pets and horses throughout Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southern Indiana, Cincinnati-based Veterinary Dermatology Services welcomes all direct patients as well as referrals from other practitioners.

If it seems that your pet's ear may be bothering them, the staff will use a high-tech video otoscope to take a closer look. One of the biggest signs your pet may be suffering from allergies or pests is from frequent ear scratching. Potential causes of ear irritation include the following:

  • Fleas, Ear Mites And Other Parasites: To check for pests, yeast overgrowth, or other ear problems, Dr. Breen will evaluate your pet's inner ear using a video otoscope. These issues are especially obnoxious for large-eared pets.
  • Pollen: If you suspect your cat or dog has allergies, Veterinary Dermatology Services can conduct an intradermal skin test, which is usually more accurate than blood testing. Just like humans, pets can be allergic to pollen and other seasonal allergens.
  • Food: If your pet's incessant ear scratching is accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea, it may be because of a food allergy. The process for diagnosing a food allergy requires switching to a temporary prescription diet, followed by a gradual re-introduction of your pet's old foods.
  • Products Or Detergents: Certain dusts and chemicals in cat litter can trigger allergic reactions in your cat. Switching to a dust-free and unscented litter can alleviate itching and irritation.

If your pet requires specialized animal skin care for an allergy or other condition, schedule your appointment with Veterinary Dermatology Services by calling (513) 489-4644.
