Digital eye strain affects nearly 33% of American adults. Whether you spend long hours looking at your phone or a computer, chances are you’ve experienced headaches, blurred vision, and eye irritation after too much screen time. Proper eye care is crucial in this case, both to prevent ill effects and preserve your vision.

How Can You Reduce Your Risk of Digital Eye Strain?

1. Take Breaks During the Day

The longer you stare at a screen, the more irritated your eyes will become. Take breaks as much as possible to reduce uncomfortable symptoms, especially at work. It’s best to take breaks every half hour or so, even just to look away from the screen for a few minutes. A good rule of thumb is to follow the 20-20-20 rule; every 20 minutes, stare at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

2. Change Screen Settings

Eye CareIncreased screen brightness is also hard on your eyes. Turn the brightness down on phones and monitors for better results. Since blue lights typically penetrate all the way to the retina and can damage the eye, you can install programs on your computer that filter them out. If you’re having trouble reading smaller print, try increasing text size, as well.

3. Improve the Lighting

Take a moment to assess the lighting around your workstation. Glare increases eye strain, especially when it’s coming from above or behind you. Close the blinds to prevent sun glare, and try to rely on softer desk lamps as much as possible.

4. Blink Often

Blinking produces tears, which helps prevent dry eyes. When working at a computer, blink more often than you normally would. This ensures your eyes remain well-lubricated throughout the day. If you still notice dryness, try using artificial tears throughout the day to keep your eyes moist.
